Artist Statement
My work addresses concepts of both the unknown/subconscious and our perceptions of memory. Water, specifically underwater, has become an important theme throughout my work. I use water as both the classic symbol of the subconscious and as a metaphor of my own development that represents our memories and the passage of time. In my life I find that it is all too easy to become trapped in a state of mind fixating on the uncertainties of my future or the comforts of my past instead of concentrating on the present. Water not only symbolizes my fears of the unknown hiding, unseen, underwater, it also becomes the manifestation of a place where my memories reside. I can dive beneath the surface to revisit the pleasures of my past, but I no longer belong and cannot survive in the environment. In my art I use the interaction of figures and an underwater environment to communicate this concept.
